When I opened Bassocantante in 1998, these pages presented recordings that only collectors of 78rpm records had access to. There was no YouTube or other sites carrying recordings of opera singers, orchestras, and pop music from the early twentieth century. Now, almost everything you could have heard here can be heard on YouTube – I encourage you to explore; there are many treasures to be found.

You can also consult Google or Wikipedia for information on the singers and other performers I previously listed.

I am aware that most of my offerings, presented in an older RealAudio format, could no longer be played. I used RealAudio streaming technology because at the time I was constructing and posting pages, most folks were using dial-up modems at no more than 56kbps. At that rate, it took several minutes to download just a snippet of a low quality mp3 recording. With today's technology, you can stream or download reasonably good audio in a few seconds.

I thank you all for your visits and kind words over the years. I don’t expect many to see this “out of business” message, but I wanted to keep something posted for a while for the benefit of those who might still land here.

If you are a novice, here is a list of singers to look for on YouTube and Wikipedia – to get you started:
